A usermap axe is a ban spread across multiple accounts associated with the same user. It is usually the result of particularly vile behavior (e.g. a suicide), countless repeated offenses, or an obvious attempt to work around the moderation system with multiple accounts. For instance, if a user creates alternate accounts with which to cause trouble, it is common for their main account to be placed in purgatory or banned along with their alts.
In the past, usermap axes came only in one flavor: the ban of all accounts associated with the user through their usermap. Since then, there have been variations in which only some accounts are banned, and sometimes a purgatory is used in place of bans.
For the most part, a usermap axe will only affect the user himself and not other users who have accidentally become associated with him; in some cases where accounts or computers are shared, though, it's simply not possible for GameFAQs to distinguish between users.
Those who get usermap axes sometimes simply go onto a different computer, or they are given an account by someone of a different usermap.
